Linguistics

Every other wing here studies something that was already there. This one studies something that had to be made: Tuwenki, a language built for a crew who speak to each other down a narrow, noisy radio link, where the channel eats syllables and a missing syllable can kill somebody. Nothing about it is decorative. Its sound system, its word order, the way it ends every sentence — each is a decision about how to survive loss, and each one is measurable. This wing measures them.

Tuwenki, its crew and the incident above are invented — a language with a complete grammar, a 610-word lexicon and a world to justify it, built with Claude. The linguistics is not invented. Everything this wing computes, it computes from that lexicon, and every number it prints you can check.

Ninety milliseconds

Redundancy is not about sending more. It is about deciding which fact you cannot afford to lose, and then spending your extra syllables on that one. English carries the polarity of a sentence in a single unstressed syllable — not — and carries no way of telling you it is gone. Delete it and what arrives is grammatical, fluent, confident, and the opposite of what was sent.

Tuwenki marks negation twice, at opposite ends of the clause: sulanto in the header and -kem on the verb. Nothing else in the language is said twice. A burst of noise takes a run of consecutive syllables, so to erase both marks it has to span the whole clause — and on the way it swallows the verb root lying between them, and a clause that arrives with no verb in it is obvious wreckage rather than a confident instruction. Three outcomes, not two: the message arrives, or the listener knows it is broken and asks again, or it inverts in silence. One burst can only ever produce the first two — it takes two independent dropouts to invert a Tuwenki clause, and that is the whole design.

EXHIBIT II · THE PARITY CHECK

The check with five states

Every Tuwenki clause ends in wV, where the vowel copies the quality — never the length — of the vowel in the verb root's stressed syllable. The listener hears the verb, works out which closure ought to follow, and compares. Five states: log₂ 5 = 2.32 bits of check on a whole sentence.

That is a real number and it buys a real, limited amount. Two verbs that share a stressed vowel pass each other's check and the closure will never tell them apart. Across the 234 verb roots in the lexicon the check catches 79.30 % of substitutions — a perfectly balanced inventory would catch exactly 80 %, so the imbalance costs seven tenths of a point. Run it and watch the diagonal of the confusion matrix fill up. Everything on that diagonal got through, silently, and the crew know it.

EXHIBIT III · THE CODEBOOK

A codebook and its distance

A syllable is a consonant, a vowel that is short or long, and maybe a final nasal. Ten onsets — ŋ never starts a syllable — five vowel qualities, two lengths, four codas: 400 combinations. But a long vowel never takes a coda, because the two written marks would collide on the glyph, so the legal space is 250. That single constraint costs a hundred and fifty syllables, and it was paid for legibility.

Of those 250, 119 are used — 47.6 % — across 581 roots, of which 546 are exactly three syllables long. So this is a fixed-length block code. And a block code's real strength is its minimum distance, which here is 1: 421 of the 581 roots have a neighbour one syllable away. tarilen / tapilen. welu / weelu — a pair the course teaches deliberately, to drill vowel length.

That is not a flaw hiding in the word list. It is the reason for everything else. A hand-minted vocabulary cannot hold its neighbours apart, so the protection was put somewhere a language can actually enforce it — in the protocol. The closure. The doubled negation. Fixed word order backing up the object suffix. Suffixes that stack one job each, so losing the tail costs you the case and not the noun. The redundancy is in the grammar, not in the dictionary.

EXHIBIT IV · EVIDENTIALITY

Where you got it from

In English, saying how you know a thing is optional and costs a clause — I saw it, the gauge says, somebody told me. In Tuwenki it is grammar, it is compulsory, and it costs nothing: the whole clause is spoken on one of three level pitches. High is my own senses. Mid is an instrument. Low is hearsay or inference. You cannot state a fact in this language without stating where it came from, because there is no pitch that means "unspecified".

The registers sit four semitones apart. The rule is the interval, not the number — set your own mid and the other two follow it. The one thing that destroys the system is a pitch contour: a speech synthesiser, and a human, drift about five semitones downward across an utterance, which is more than the whole spacing. Turn on let it drift and watch a sentence begin as something you witnessed and end as something you were told.

EXHIBIT V · A FEATURAL SCRIPT

Nine dots

Most alphabets are arbitrary: nothing about the shape of k tells you where your tongue goes. A featural script is one where the shape is a diagram of the sound — Hangul is the famous example, and this is another, built from scratch on a grid of nine dots.

One syllable is one block. The upper two rows carry the consonant, and its column is the place: left is the lips, centre the tongue tip, right the tongue body. The added mark is the manner — bare stroke for a stop, a bar across the top for a nasal, through the middle for a fricative, along the foot for a lateral, side ticks for a trill, a bow for a glide. The bottom row is the vowel: one stroke from the centre dot, pointing by compass, front leaning up and back leaning down, with a dot at the tip if it is long. Build a block and it tells you what your mouth is doing.

The whole language is next door.

Five exhibits is what a museum room can hold. The language itself is a course of twenty-four chapters that teaches it from the first sound to a reading you can actually read, with every clause in it machine-checked against every other, a grammar on one page, a dictionary, a writing system, a spaced-review deck, and a validator that will tell you exactly what is wrong with a sentence you have written.

It is not styled like this museum, it does not want to be, and it is the only thing on this site that loads recorded sound — 812 clips, because the pitch registers in Exhibit IV could not be left to a synthesiser that drifts. Walking in is walking out of the museum, which is the honest description of it.
